Hosting and VoIP Numbers

What is Hosting?

You can think of a number as a "bundle" of permissions - call permissions, text permissions, fax permissions etc.  When we host a number, we essentially "borrow" the SMS (text) and MMS (texting pictures/ videos) permissions for a number.  The benefit of this is that you can text your customers from the same number you use to call them.

What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Provider. It's an alternative to a traditional landline number. If your number is a VoIP number, in order to make your number eligible for hosting with us we have to ask your provider to let us borrow the texting permissions. It is up to them whether or not they allow this. The quickest way to get texting rights for a number released is for you to reach out to your phone carrier.

How to release your texting rights:

  1. Contact your current phone service provider and ask to speak with the department responsible for SMS routing.
  2. Ask them to delete your existing eSPID routing profile.  Typically the carrier will send you an email to inform you when this has taken place.
  3. Once we have confirmation that this has been done, we can typically proceed with setup.  We recommend waiting 24 hours and to try and text-enable your number again.

Please note it may sometimes take 1-3 days depending on your service provider.  Contact support if you have any questions.
